Inspired by traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is a therapy completed by trained allied health professionals to assist pain and mobility. By targeting areas of perceived tightness, restriction and pain, dry needling can improve blood flow and pain signalling to the area resulting in improved mobility and reduced discomfort.
The process involves the use of fine needles inserted into muscle or fascia. The sensation felt when needling depends on a number of factors, however common sensations include a twitch, ache or simply an awareness of the needle. There are a number of approaches when needling and your therapist will decide the best technique to use to approach your concerns. For example, by simply changing the duration the needles are in for, movement of the needle or number or needles the 'intensity' of the treatment can be modified.
Dry needling is one of many approaches that can be used to assist pain and mobility. To determine if this technique is suitable for you, we recommend discussing with your Elevate allied health professional.
